This fall, Warwick’s sports teams have once again taken the school by storm. There are days when you can look around the halls and see a collage of jerseys. Each team is made up of amazing athletes, but the purpose of this article is to highlight an individual on each team that had or is having an outstanding season.This fall, Warwick’s sports teams have once again taken the school by storm. Each team is made up of amazing athletes, but the purpose of this article is to highlight an individual on each team that had or is having an outstanding season.

Cross Country: Thomas Gardiner

What position do you play? I’m a runner so I don’t really have a position.

Do you plan on running in college?  Yes, I do plan on running in college. I’m looking to run at Xavier College, High point,  Iona, and the University of Kentucky.

What do you love most about the sport? I love the comradery and the team bonding the most in cross country. It’s really relaxing it’s really stressful at times and you have to be focused,but it can take your mind away from what’s bothering you. 

What was the highlight of the season for you? To me, the highlight of this season so far has been the Mcquaid Invitational. Every year we take a trip and this year we went to Rochester. At first we weren’t doing so well and then every thing came together and we did well.

Have   you  had  to  overcome  any  obstacles? Yes, the season started out slow and I was not really feeling well, but i’m back on track now.Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspirations are the Purple Ghosts, or seniors that came before me, especially  when I was a freshman.

Football: Connor Perez

What position do you play? I’m a wide receiver.

Do  you  plan  on  playing  football  in  college? No, I don’t plan on playing football in college.

What do you love most about the sport? The thing I love the most about football is the team bonding, I love playing with my teammates.

What was the highlight of the season for you? The Monroe game and winning that game, that has been the highlight of the season.

Have  you  had  to  overcome  any  obstacles? Yes- everyone doubted the team’s ability to win and do well. Also, I got hurt, but it was nothing big.

Who has been your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration has to be my mom because she always supports me and wants the best for me.

Volleyball: Kara Verhage

What position do you play? I’m the Libero, which is a defensive player in volleyball.

Do you plan on playing volleyball in college? Yes, I plan on playing volleyball in college.

What do you love most about the sport? I love how when I’m having a bad day I can look forward to playing volleyball later, it   always makes me feel better and keeps my mind off of things.

What was the highlight of the season for you? The highlight of the season has been beating Kingston.

Have  you  had  to  overcome  any  obstacles? I had a lack of confidence and needed to build it.

Who has been your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration has always been my sister.

Girl’s Soccer: Catie Smith

What position do you play? I play center midfield.

Do you plan on playing in college? Yes, I do plan on playing in college.

What  do  you  love  the  most  about  soccer? I love my team and that it’s a team game and I get to work with my teammates.

What  has  been  the  highlight  of  the  season? Winning three games in a row has been the highlight of my season.

Have  you  had  to  overcome  any  obstacles? No, I haven’t had to overcome any obstacles this season.

Who has been your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration has been my coach, Jill Farro. She has been so supportive and I love her.

Boy’s Soccer: Sam LaTorre

What position do you play? I play center attacking midfielder.

Do you plan on playing in college? I do plan on playing in college.

What do you love most about soccer? I love the rush of the game and how you never slow down. 

What has been the highlight of the season for you? Beating Washingtonville in the last minute has been the highlight of the season for me so far. 

Have  you  had  to  overcome  any  obstacles? Yes, I have. I fractured my knee in the spring, and I was out all summer and preseason. Now I just have to do stretches for my knee.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration is my dad, he has always encouraged me and supports me no matter what.

Tennis: Jackie Grundfast

What position do you play? I play first singles.

Do  you  plan  on  playing  tennis  in  college? I don’t unless it’s club tennis.

What do you love most about the sport? I love the feeling of hitting a great shot and knowing my practice and hard work allowed me to do so. Also the team bonding. I can now call my teammates my family, which I am grateful for.

Have you had to overcome any obstacles this season? Yes, I was sick this season and had a hard time with some of my matches because of that, but I still pushed myself to play.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My team is my biggest inspiration- they make me want to do well.

Diving: Amanda Mcgraw

What position do you play? My position on the Swim and Dive team is a diver.

Do you plan on diving in college? I am planning on diving in college. Right now, I have official visits planned for Bucknell University, Boston University, and Rutgers University. 

What do you love most about the sport? I love diving because I had a gymnastics background before I started, which gave me an upper hand considering the two have so much in common. Since I started diving much later than most of the other people, I still enjoy going to practice and still see myself progressing whereas others have started to plateau from doing the same thing for so long.

What has been the highlight of the season for you? My highlight of my season so far was definitely breaking the Warwick’s pool record. My goal this season was to break one of Warwick’s records, so it was very exciting, as well as qualifying for states at the same meet. 

Have you had to overcome any obstacles this season? I overcame a couple of obstacles that I faced last season, I was diagnosed with mono and the flu during my season last fall. Overcoming these obstacles have made me much stronger this year.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration in diving has definitely been my dad. He always pushes me to do the best I can and has led me to where I stand today.

So far, Warwick Valley’s Seniors have had an amazing year in sports. 2017 has been a year of wins, record breaking, and team bonding. These athletes have influenced their sports in the best way and so far have made this season unforgettable.
